What Child Support Covers – And Does NOT Cover

Since the introduction of the concept of child support, non-custodial and custodial parents are in constant disagreement regarding how the money should be utilized on their children. To simplify the issue, states have formed certain guidelines regarding how much is to be paid by the non-custodial parent and what this money should be used for regarding child support.

Below is a list regarding what qualifies, and what does not qualify for child support:

What is Child Support Supposed to Cover? 

Basic necessities of life - food, shelter and clothing

Child support payments should provide for the children’s food, shelter and clothing. There has to be enough money to provide for basic items needed for day to day living.

Medical Care

Some states call for separated or divorced parents, to provide health insurance for their children. Usually, the state will place the responsibility on the parent that has employee benefits that cover dental and medical plans for the children.

Uninsured Medical Expenses

Any uninsured medical expenditures can be paid from child support. Many states call for both parents to distribute the cost to avoid an unnecessary burden on just one of the parents.

What is Not Supposed to be used with Child Support? 

Unless specified as child support by the state, the following usually does not qualify for child support. Parents will have to share these expenses. 

Education Related Costs 

Any school-related expenses likeprivate tutoring or private schooling will notbe payed from child support payments.

Childcare

If the guardian is not able to handle the care of their child because of work obligations, child supportis usually not covered forchildcare services.

Entertainment Costs

Child support cannotbe used for entertainment needs for children such as games, computers, Internet, etc. This includes trips to the amusement park, movies orotherentertainmentactivities.

College Expenses

Unless the state has specified, a child’s college expense cannot be used from child support payments. It is the parents’ responsibility to cover these expenses separately if they want to save for their child’s college education.

Child’s First Car

Child support cannot be used to buy a caror its insurance for the children.

Private Lessons

If the child is taking private lessons such as dance,music, tennis, gymnastics or any other such activity, it will not qualify under child support. The parents will have to cover this cost on their own.
